March 17th was our 1st ILC (Innovation and Learning Committee) Meeting. The conversation was exciting but might have been overwhelming for some. Please add your post-meeting thougths to this blog.
Yesterday just confirmed for me that I am working in the best county in this state. It is so empowering to feel supported by your leadership and peers to take risks. We are leading the way in developing relevant, meaningful instruction that is preparing our students to meet the fast-paced technological savvy workforce of the future. I am excited to be a part of this committee, and I can't wait until our next meeting!
Probably, the number one benefit for me is finally getting to meet some of our star teachers face-to-face. You guys are incredible. The energy in the room and the things being said were very inspiring and promising! I think this group can have an incredible impact on the direction our district takes in the future. I'm looking forward to our next steps!
April Clecker just had a great idea "What do you think about getting specific community members/parents involved to read the same book we will be reading?... I felt that it may help communication and involement for the community."
I, like Lucas, am glad to put faces with names of innovative teachers in our system. I think the work of this committee will definitely help move our district to the next level...the possibility of differentiated staff development for teachers at Convocation is very exciting!
It was awesome to see so many leaders in one room. I think this is one of the best things to happen to Pender Couuty Schools in a long time. The ideas that were shared and discussed were excellent. We do have our work cut out for us. Giving teachers ownership is a powerful tool.
@Molly: I think April's idea is great. Parents should be reading this book, and I think that it can only improve the support that they are giving us. Perhaps we could do a book study online. Having a place were both teachers and parents can comment on the book would be a great way to interact. Perhaps we could create a wiki or use a moodle course to great discussion threads and forums.
I agree that parents and community leaders should be invited, but what about the students. We have some bright and talented student leaders in our school that could contribute to the ILC. I'm sure other schools do as well.
I think a community book study involving parents, community leaders AND students would be great! I have had a few students pick up the book and ask me about it, and express curiousity about the theory. I like the idea of an online book study as well-
